Book Recycling

Books

Books cannot be recycled in your Blue Bin, even if they are soft cover. The best thing to do with books in decent condition is find them a new home. OCRRA has 2 great solutions for you!

1) Donate Them: The Salvation Army, local hospitals, and nursing homes are great places to donate books in good condition. Most libraries in Onondaga County conduct book sales to help raise funds. Contact libraries, before bringing a donation, to confirm any special dates or requirements for book donations.

Generally, libraries do NOT accept textbooks, encyclopedias, books in poor condition (musty, wet, dirty), condensed Reader's Digests, or magazines.

2) Recycle Them: OCRRA will recycle them for free at our Community Collection Center. Simply separate your hard from your soft cover books and deliver them to the center during normal hours of operation.

Residents are responsible for taking back any containers or boxes
that they use to transport their books.

NOTE: If you have a large volume of books to recycle (more than 10 medium-size boxes) please schedule a drop-off appointment, in advance, by calling 453-2866. Due to the high volume of traffic at C3, we may not be able to accommodate large drop-offs during all regular hours, so please set up an appointment before arriving.

OCRRA organizes local non-profit groups and allows them to sort through the collected books for items that may assist them in their missions. The remaining books are collected and sent to a paper company that reprocesses them into other paper products or roofing felt.

Magazines

Magazines can be recycled all year long in your Blue Bin or at OCRRA's Rock Cut Road Transfer Station.
